THE KID FROM LA PUENTE
ENGRAVED ON A NATION
TSN/BELL MEDIA
2014 | 44 mins
It’s like a script from a Hollywood movie: A young Hispanic kid trying to escape the barrios of East L.A., a father who deserts the family, a brother running with the local gang. But for Anthony Calvillo --- one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of Canadian football – it’s the story of his life.
Now, for the first time, Anthony and his family reveal that story, one they’ve tried for years to keep from the public eye. They’ve opened up for one reason: Anthony believes his experience might inspire young kids facing the same challenges he did to push through their hurt, and fight for their dreams.
The Kid From La Puente, narrated by Anthony’s brother, Mario, is a story about brotherhood, family, loyalty and sacrifice. For Anthony, it’s also about the people who’ve helped him along the way. Ultimately, as Mario puts it, Anthony’s story is about overcoming. At the height of his success in Canada, when love, marriage and fatherhood had finally given him a happy home, he would face his biggest test of all.
