Part thriller, part personal drama, Inside The Great Vaccine Race is the powerful story of the high stakes mission to save millions of lives, a mission that continues with more than 4 billion people still to receive a single shot. This gripping documentary launches the 61st season of CBC’s The Nature of Things.

Inside The Great Vaccine Race is also a chronicle of the remarkable personal journey of the scientists who sacrificed everything to produce one of the greatest medical breakthroughs in the last 100 years.

In Canada, Dr. Alyson Kelvin will leave her family behind to work on a vaccine. She won’t see them for months. In Germany, Prof Uğur Şahin and his wife, Dr. Özlem Türeci risk their company to create the world’s first RNA vaccine. Within a year, the whole world will know their names.

In China, Dr. Xuefeng Yu is backed by the military. In just 50 days his company will be winning the race. And, in the U.K., Dr. Jonathan Heeney is chasing the Holy Grail – a vaccine that protects against multiple coronaviruses.

Inside The Great Vaccine Race was filmed over a year while the coronavirus ravaged the world. It follows the unfolding pandemic in real time and reveals how every new crisis increases the pressure on each team. From news that the virus has shut down Wuhan, to the moment BioNTech succeeds, it captures in intimate detail this quest to achieve the impossible.

From the streets of Brazil to the bat caves of Thailand, from the biohazard labs of China to the high security vaccine facilities of Germany, this is the inside story of the race to save everyone on Earth.
