SECRETS IN THE BONES
THE HUNT FOR THE BLACK DEATH KILLER
CBC TELEVISION, THE NATURE OF THINGS
2014 | 44 mins
It was called the Black Death and it killed more than 50 million people. But 600 years after it struck no one knows what caused it. To this day it remains one of the greatest scientific mysteries of our time.
Now a modern day Indian Jones is on a quest to solve this ancient mystery, a discovery that could help us fight deadly infectious diseases today.
Hendrik Poinar is an evolutionary biologist. In an epic global journey he goes in search of the remains of people killed by The Black Death. He believes their bones still contain vestiges of the pathogen that took their lives. With new technology developed by his lab, Poinar believes he can extract it and identify what it is.
Secrets in the Bones is a fascinating investigation that follows Poinar from a newly discovered Black Death cemetery in Italy to a top secret anti-terrorism facility in the United States, to a bone repository in the United Kingdom to the labs at the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention in Colorado as he attempts to do something no other scientist has achieved before - resurrect an ancient pathogen.
In the process, Secrets in the Bones provides an inside look at an extraordinary scientific discovery that could change the way we fight killer diseases of the 21st century.
