Sound is the vocabulary of nature. It plays a crucial role in the lives, evolution, and everyday struggle of animals. But so far, we’ve only heard part of the story.

Using cutting edge audio technology, host Anthony Morgan takes us on a journey into a hidden world.   In this ground-breaking three-part CBC Nature of Things Special, he explores the extraordinary ways animals use sound to hunt, mate and survive.

From the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa; from the Rocky Mountains of Canada to the reefs of Indonesia; and from the deserts of Arizona to the rainforests of Malaysia, Morgan uncovers a startling new perspective on animal behaviour.

In Secret World of Sound, he will show us how baby caiman communicate with each other while they’re still inside the egg, discover how lions and hyenas wield sound to battle in the dark of night, and introduce a fish that sings and a bird that can mimic a crying baby.

Filmed in 4K ultra-high definition, each episode includes a look Behind the Scenes. In these, filmmakers reveal the fascinating science, advanced technology, and challenging environmental issues at the heart of sound in the natural world.

Packed with drama, conflict and new discoveries, Secret World of Sound will transport viewers into a hidden world and create a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

  • In Episode One: Hunters and Hunted, we enter a world where sound is the difference between finding a meal and becoming one.

In the deserts of Arizona, we meet the kangaroo rat that uses hollow spaces in its skull to amplify the faintest sounds — including the rustle of a rattlesnake sliding across the sand.

In an English garden we take flight with a bumble bee that employs its buzz to unlock a hidden treasure.

And in the Bahamas, we venture beyond what we can hear. We join a pod of dolphins to reveal how they utilize echolocation with amazing precision to find their prey hidden under the sand on the ocean floor.

Each episode includes a look Behind the Scenes. In this one, our team brave minus 40-degree Celsius temperatures in Canada to discover how the great grey owl manipulates sound to capture its prey under nearly a metre of snow.

  • In Episode Two: Love and Rivals, we enter a world where sound is used to impress, find a mate, and fight off a rival.

In the forests of eastern Australia, we observe the male lyrebird, one of the greatest mimics of the natural world, attempt to wow a female with his complex song – including the sounds of other birds and a car alarm.

In the vast grasslands of Alberta, we watch as male sharp-tailed grouse gather to put on an elaborate dance routine to attract a female – complete with rattling tail feathers and popping neck sacks.

And on the west coast of Washington State, we meet a fish that sings. Each summer the male plainfin midshipman uses his stunning song to convince a female to leave the deep ocean and lay her eggs in his nest.

Each episode includes a look Behind the Scenes. In this one, we join our team as they film the treehopper, a creature no larger than a dime, to capture the song the male uses to find a mate.

  • In Episode Three: Finding A Voice, we follow baby animals as they use sound to announce their arrival, beg for food and call for help during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

In the swamps of South America, baby caiman communicate with each other while still inside the egg to increase their chances of survival by arriving simultaneously.

In Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, we get an unprecedented look at a group of wolf pups. Many pups don’t make it beyond their first year and these ones must use their howl to stave off danger and protect the pack.

And in England we venture beyond what we can hear. More than 200 thousand species communicate in ways that are silent to us. We enter the rich and vibrant realm of the honeybee to discover how they use special sounds to crown a new queen.

Each episode includes a look Behind the Scenes. In this one, we join a team of Australian researchers using sound to save a reef bleached by warming oceans.
